Project summary: The main objective of this project was to strengthen the capacity of the Audiovisual and Communications Authority (HAAC) for organizing the March 2003 legislative elections in an efficient manner. Activities included training and sensitization of HAAC analysts through workshops on ways to raise public awareness about the elections and the importance of the rights of the press. The project also aimed at setting up a global programme to support the development of a more professional media. Instead of organizing ad-hoc workshops; the idea wa to recruit an international expert who would spend one month with each media outlet participating in the programme to provide support to journalists; editors and administrative staff in the field.
